Reporting to the Manager of Partnership, the Underwriting Consultant is an expert in providing support to the MGA/Sales force in regards underwritten cases for life, critical illness and disability insurance and to the sales force as well. The incumbent displays exceptional competences in communication and all levels of risk selection, including medical and non-medical factors, testing procedures, reinsurance practices, complex sales- and product-related concepts, and financial underwriting.
Your roles will be:
Assess/review the most complex individual insurance applications for life, critical illness and disability insurance products for cases brought to your attention. Provide the most competitive underwriting decisions, taking into consideration the relationship with the MGA and the underwriting guidelines.
Sales force Competency Development:
Provide answers to MGA/sales force on underwriting issues (explanation of decisions, questions on processes or UW rules etc.) to facilitate progression of complex files, by phone or email. Perform preliminary analysis of underwriting files Take part in meetings with sales force Collaborate closely with iA’s distribution teams to understand the evolution in the Canadian market and proactively respond to identified needs Promote the adoption of the tools and provide training to MGAs on new business processes and underwriting guidelines Identify and recommend opportunities for improvement according to the MGAs feedback for New Business and Underwriting Operations Presentation/training on underwriting topics to MGAs (e.g. new guidelines) Relationship-building with networks
College or University degree in a health sciences or related field or equivalent experience in an underwriter role.
Advanced knowledge in underwriting principles gained from a minimum of 12 years underwriting experience, where the most recent years were spent in a senior underwriting role. Attainment of the Fellow, Academy of Life Underwriting (FALU) designation or working towards it. Proven track record in underwriting quality. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills Strong knowledge of underwriting systems and manuals, both for insurers and reinsurers. Client- and advisor-centric with a continuous improvement mindset. Strong communication skills, both written and oral. Bilingualism in English and French is an asset Aptitude for negotiation, organization and multi-tasking. Excellent presentation skills. Comfortable in learning and applying new technologies.
