Head underwriter

Your role:

• Support underwriters as a resource person and provide training
• Recommend corrective measures and new practices  (medical or non-medical) based on the assessment of the field and improve/amend the relevant underwriting rules
• Monitor the quality of the underwriters’ and insurance agents’ work by checking, through sampling, the decisions and proposals submitted
• Support underwriters in charge of post-issue underwriting cases referred by the Claims department and evaluate cases where death occurred during the underwriting process.
• Leveraging your business acumen and feedback from Claims, propose ideas to improve our processes and underwriting rules to remain competitive in the market, ensuring that the relationship between the underwriting rules and those of partner departments (Policyowner Services, Marketing, Actuarial Services, etc.) is taken into account.
• Handle various improvement requests related to underwriting and manage change within the teams concerned
• Act as a reasonable underwriter in litigation files that the Company or other companies are contesting before the courts
• Work in collaboration with the other underwriters on the Partnership, Improvements and Operations team on various mandates for presentations to the sales force, for example, or the assessment of complex files and educational initiatives
• Recommend and implement methods to improve the underwriting quality control process, for both underwriters and distribution advisors
• Contribute to our ambition of accelerating and automating underwriting, particularly by changing underwriting rules, developing our processes and helping to implement new technologies

Desired profile:

• Bachelor’s degree and/or a minimum of ten years’ relevant experience in individual insurance underwriting for life insurance and living benefits products
• FALU designation (asset)
• FLMI designation (asset)
• Advanced level in English and French as the incumbent will be required to provide support and training on a daily basis to the Canada-wide French-speaking and English-speaking underwriting team
• A combination of experience and training may be considered for this position
