Quebec driver’s licence: Everything you need to know
Understand Quebec’s Driver’s Licence System
The Société de l'Assurance Automobile du Québec (SAAQ) oversees Quebec’s driver’s licence system and a Class 5 driver’s licence is what you need to operate a car in Quebec.
Can I use my foreign licence in Quebec?
Wondering if you can use your current licence in Quebec? Yes! For up to six months after moving here.
After six months, depending on where you’re from, you might have an easier transition than you think. Some countries have reciprocity agreements with Quebec for a streamlined licence exchange:
- Austria
- Belgium
- France
- Germany
- Great Britain: England, Scotland, Wales
- Isle of Man
- Japan
- The Netherlands: Holland and the Dutch Antilles (Sint Maarten, Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba and Sint Eustatius)
- Northern Ireland
- Republic of Korea (South Korea)
- Switzerland
- Taiwan
- USA
- Other Canadian provinces
If your country isn’t on the list, you’ll need to take knowledge and road tests regardless of your driving experience.
Tip: Check with the SAAQ for the requirements based on your country of origin.
How do I get my Quebec driver’s licence?
You can apply for your driver’s licence through the SAAQ as soon as you arrive in Quebec if you are a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or have another type of immigration status.
The process to get your Quebec driver’s licence depends on your country of origin and whether there is a reciprocity agreement in place.
Can I transfer my driver’s licence without registering my vehicle?
When you move to Quebec from another province or country, you can transfer your driver’s licence right away without registering your vehicle.
If you brought a vehicle from outside the province, you have three months to register it. Registration costs depend on the type of vehicle.
Tip: Contact the SAAQ to find out what documents you need to register a vehicle from outside Quebec.
Once your car is registered, you’ll need car insurance. Here are some ways you can save on your car insurance.
How do I renew my driver’s licence?
In Quebec, driver’s licence renewal is done through the SAAQ every four to six years depending on your driver’s licence class. The SAAQ also requires an annual renewal fee due on your birthday.
You’ll get a renewal notice three months before your licence expires, and another reminder each year for the renewal fee.
You can pay the fees through your financial institution online, by phone or in person. Contact the SAAQ for personalized information about fee amounts.
How do I update my address on my driver’s licence?
Changing your address on your driver’s licence is an important detail if you move within the province of Quebec. Notify the SAAQ within 30 days of moving and update your address online, by mail or in person at a SAAQ office.
You’ll get your new driver’s licence with your updated address in the mail.
Tips for new Quebec residents
There are several things you can do to have a smooth transition to a Quebec driver’s licence and hitting the road.

- Get familiar with Quebec’s traffic laws and road signs, which may be different from those in your home country or province.

- Do your homework when car shopping. Here’s some helpful things to consider if you’re buying a used car.
