Have you just bought your dream home or are you moving into a new apartment? A successful move takes planning, especially to avoid any unpleasant surprises related to your belongings or home insurance.

Here are 5 essential tips for a successful, stress-free move.

1. Why do you need to contact your insurer before moving?

Before you even start packing, it’s important to contact your insurer. They can confirm that your belongings will be fully covered throughout the entire moving process.

If you’ll be moving gradually, make sure you remain covered for both your old and your new residence.

Also remember to:

Report any changes in your situation
Adapt your coverage to your new residence
Insure your belongings if you use a storage unit

2. How can you make sure your belongings are covered during the move?

If you decide to use a moving company, make sure they have insurance that will cover your belongings during transport.

If you choose to rent a moving truck, you must have “Borrowed or rented vehicle coverage” (Q.E.F. 27) on your insurance policy to be protected in case of an accident since it is a rented vehicle.

Important: Not all trucks are covered by Q.E.F. 27. Depending on the vehicle you rent, insurance from the rental company may be required.

3. What equipment do you need for a safe move?

If you prefer to move on your own, make sure you are properly equipped. For example, use straps or a hand truck when moving heavy objects. This will prevent you from getting hurt or damaging your belongings.

4. How do you properly install your appliances when moving in?

Every year, water damage occurs as a result of improper installation of washers, dishwashers or water dispenser refrigerators. It is therefore important to make sure valves are tightly closed when disconnecting hoses and pipes from your appliances.

Once in your new residence, make sure your appliance connections are watertight or consult with a plumber if necessary.

When moving your refrigerator or freezer involves laying them down horizontally, it is recommended to wait two to six hours before plugging them back in to allow their fluids to settle.

5. When and how do you change your address?

When moving, many factors can change your insurance needs, such as the type of building, location, year of construction, etc. It is therefore essential to inform your insurer of your move as soon as possible.

Good to know: Moving from an upstairs unit to a basement unit increases your exposure to water-related risks. In this case, we recommend Water Damage – Ground Water and Sewers coverage.
