Quick reference – Your home insurance quote application

Man speaks on the phone in front of his laptop

Make sure you have the information below on hand if you are moving into your first home or if you are renewing your home insurance.

Before you submit your application for a home insurance quote, you should make sure you have the following information available:

  • Current insurance policy
  • Municipal assessment
  • Size of the home and the lot
  • Spec sheet
  • Purchase cost and date of your home
  • Year built
  • Details of any renovations
  • Details of prior damages

You will also be asked to provide information, such as the type and/or date of installation, for the following:

  • Siding
  • Roof
  • Water heater
  • Heating
  • Fireplace
  • Check valves
  • Electrical wiring
  • Electric box
  • Alarm system
  • Pool and hot tub
  • Oil tank
  • Discharge pump and catchment basin

Remember to inventory your property

Preparing a complete inventory of your possessions will help you to make sure that your insurance coverage corresponds to the value of your assets. Some people will make a complete list of their possessions while others will take pictures and videos. To help you create this inventory, the Insurance Bureau of Canada has created a property inventory form.

Home Insurance Spec Sheet

To help you with your insurance shopping process, fill out the home insurance spec sheet. Keep this spec sheet with your insurance papers so you always have the information you need at hand.

Do you have all this information in hand?

You are now ready to submit your home insurance quote application and decide what type of insurance you need!

Did you know…

You can save on your insurance costs by bundling your home and your auto insurance? Discounts are also available if you have other products with your insurance company. Certain factors, such as having an alarm system connected to a telemonitoring station or being a non-smoking home, can reduce your insurance premiums. However, carrying out commercial activities in the home, as well as the distance between your home and a fire station and the distance between your home and a fire hydrant, can increase your insurance premiums.
