Snowbirds: check your insurance policies carefully before you go

Getting ready for your annual pilgrimage to the South? Before you take off to enjoy the sun and sand, take a few minutes to check that your insurance—car, home and travel—is up to date. Our advisors will help you make the most of an extended trip, with no clouds on the horizon!

1- Auto insurance: increase your civil liability coverage

What you need to know before driving abroad. Your driver’s license is valid in several countries, but your auto insurance only covers you in Canada and the United States. So, for example, if you’re planning on driving during a trip to Mexico, you’ll need to take out additional insurance when you arrive.

Another tip: increase the amount of civil liability insurance you have on your auto insurance policy. In Quebec, victims of bodily injury apply directly to the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) for compensation. Abroad, the victim may instead take legal action against the driver. A $2 million civil liability insurance policy is better suited for this!

Finally, you’ve got the riders you added to your auto insurance policy all packed! Riders are optional, additional benefits thadt are only available as long as your auto insurance remains in force. Automax protection is an example of a rider offered by iA Auto and Home.

2- Home insurance: make sure your home is protected… even when you’re not there!

Contact your insurer before you leave to notify them of any prolonged vacancy. Your insurer can advise you on preventive measures you should take to reduce the risk of damages occurring during your absence.

There are certain exclusions to home insurance policies that apply during a vacancy of more than 7 consecutive days. For example, water damage caused by freezing plumbing or water-containing systems or appliances in a heated building during the normal heating season, when the insured premises have been unoccupied for more than 7 consecutive days, is not covered by your insurer.

However, this exclusion does not apply if, after this 7-day period:

  • You’ve arranged for a competent person to visit your home daily to ensure that the heating system is working properly
  • You turned off the water and drained all fixtures and appliances before you left

For many people, your home is your most valuable asset. Make sure you take all the necessary steps to protect it from damages while you’re away. By taking these precautions, you’ll be able to enjoy your stay in the sun to the fullest, with complete peace of mind!

3- Travel insurance: pack your essentials!

Travel insurance is a combination of different coverages. In addition to Emergency Medical Insurance, it offers trip cancellation and interruption coverage as standard, as well as protection for your luggage against theft, breakage or damage.

Emergency medical insurance is particularly important. Medical care is not covered by the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ) when you’re abroad. That means if you’re involved in an emergency and need medical care or hospitalization, you’ll be facing significant fees. Travel insurance covers the cost of prescription drugs, consultations with a doctor, medical services and ambulance transportation, regardless of whether you go to a medical clinic or hospital.

💡Snowbirds: a 183-day absence limit outside Quebec

Did you know? To continue to be insured under the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ) public plan, the insured must not be absent for more than 183 days, consecutive or otherwise, during the same calendar year. If you live in Quebec, you’ll need to comply with this rule to maintain your eligibility for public health insurance.
