Preventing damage to your roof

Whether brought on by a snowstorm or a thunderstorm, windstorms are a common occurrence year-round in Quebec.

High winds can cause serious damage to your home, especially to your roof.

Here are some tips to help you prevent and identify roof damage.

Roof checks

After a windstorm, take the time to check the condition of your roof. Strong winds can tear off shingles and cause damage. Failure to repair the shingles in a timely manner can lead to further damage such as water infiltration.

If you can see your roof, check it for damage. You can also hire a professional roofer to do this for you.

Here are signs that your roof may need to be fixed after a windstorm:

• Missing shingle pieces
• Visible roof structure
• Shingles on the ground

If you notice any damage, contact your insurance company right away. They’ll advise you on what to do.

Proper roof maintenance

Besides making sure your roof is in good condition after severe weather, it’s important to maintain it to prevent damage.

In winter, be sure to clear snow and ice from your roof—too much of it can damage the roof structure and cause water infiltration.

You should also take the time to clear snow from your roof if rain or sleet is forecast. This adds weight to the snow on the roof, which can cause damage and weaken the structure.

In fall, as you prepare your home for winter, remove leaves and debris from your gutters. Clogged gutters can cause water to accumulate, which in turn can cause damage or leaks in your home’s roofing, siding or trim.

Don’t wait for a windstorm

Association des maîtres couvreurs du Québec (AMCQ) recommends checking your roof twice a year, before and after the freeze and thaw cycle. You should also check your attic to make sure it’s well insulated and there are no signs of mould.

Vulnerable roofs

While all roofs can suffer wind damage, some are more vulnerable than others. If your roof is showing signs of deterioration and is aging, it should be replaced.

Here are signs that your roof may need to be replaced:

• Warping in some areas
• Curling or deformed shingles
• Bare shingles or granules in gutters
• Nails sticking out of the roof
