The individual insurance underwriting team is at the heart of our mission to protect as many Canadians as possible and plays a crucial role in risk selection. The Manager, Underwriting Operations, will be responsible for managing and supervising a team of underwriters, ensuring coordination of activities and adherence to standards for deadlines, productivity, and quality

Main Responsibilities:

  • Team Management: Manage and supervise a team of about thirty individual insurance and living benefits (disability insurance) underwriters, ensuring coordination of activities and adherence to standards for deadlines, productivity, and quality.
  • Supervision and Coaching: In collaboration with underwriting consultants, identify training needs, support continuous development and coaching of underwriters to increase team maturity and ensure decision-making aligned with our risk selection policies.
  • Performance Management: Evaluate collective and individual performance, manage gaps and be responsible for the Altitude performance appraisal process.
  • Process Improvement: Identify and recommend opportunities for improvement in the underwriting process and promote harmonization of practices between insurance and living benefits. Collaborate with appropriate teams to implement necessary actions.
  • Transformational Initiative: Be a change ambassador for automation projects, artificial intelligence, and modernization of life insurance systems, among others.

  • Continuous Improvement: Commitment to innovation and continuous improvement of processes, staying abreast of best practices and new technologies.
  • Judgment: Ability to make informed and judicious decisions, considering implications for the team and organization.
  • Sector Knowledge: Good understanding of life and disability insurance underwriting principles, as well as industry regulations and standards.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: Minimum of 10 years of experience in life and/or disability insurance underwriting, with previous experience in team management.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
  • Assets: FLMI, ALU, Operational Knowledge of Underwriting Systems and Manuals
  • Advanced level of French and English language proficiency, as the person will be involved in meetings with reinsurers, lead daily meetings with the team, attend conferences, and communicate with French and English speaking internal partners on a daily basis.
