Underwriting Director

Your role will notably include:

The sector’s vision 

• Implement and communicate strategic underwriting objectives in line with our ambition to maximize decisions at the point of sale

• Work closely with the Strategy and Analytics team to use data to support the proper functioning of teams and processes, and to innovate in our underwriting practices to prepare the team for current and future challenges and market trends. 

• Collaborate regularly with the other members of the Claims and New Business Management Operational Committee to define common priorities and align working methods (e.g. link with case management and new sales teams)

Operations and Management

• Be responsible for managing the operations of the underwriting team by providing a robust pan-Canadian interaction model that allows for efficient allocation of cases to be handled, based on expertise, language and time zone, and enables a rapid response to partners' needs

• Produce and maintain various management reports on the productivity and efficiency of underwriters and implement action plans to improve them

• Ensure sound cost management of internal and external resources used in the underwriting process

• Provide leadership to the team, including activities related to training, development and performance appraisal of assistant managers: More specifically, you will be responsible for ensuring the sound and effective management of resources, managing performance, developing and upgrading talent in line with individual and strategic needs, and building a succession management plan for key positions

• In the event of escalation to a higher level, you will need to make decisions for specific cases requiring extraordinary business judgment

Quality of business

• Provide feedback on quality to managers and underwriters following audit results, to help them develop and progress in their careers as underwriters

• Ensure that the processes in place provide a high-quality experience to effectively meet the expectations of individual insurance agencies, advisors and clients
• Ensure the compliance of underwriting policies

REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor’s degree in business administration or equivalent degree in a related field
• A minimum of 10 years' experience in the insurance industry
• In-depth knowledge of human resources management
• A results-oriented manager who encourages teamwork
• Knowledge of individual underwriting would be an asset
• Advanced knowledge of the English language as the individual will be making presentations to English-speaking sales force partners across Canada on a monthly basis
• Recognized life and health insurance designation would be an asset (LOMA, ALU, etc.)
