Description

Reporting to the Senior Managing Counsel, the incumbent will:

  • Handle legal demands and proceedings directly for the Company and its subsidiaries (and manage external counsel if required)

  • Draft all pleadings, motions, mediation briefs and pre-trial briefs

  • Attend court proceedings, including motions, discoveries, pre-trial conferences, and mediations

  • Negotiate and settle demands and claims in a cost effective, efficient manner while meeting the needs of  business partners

  • Act as an advisor for litigation opinions and strategy

  • Analyze legislation, conduct legal research and provide business-oriented legal opinions on non-litigation files as required

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Called to the bar in Ontario and a Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario

  • A minimum of 2-3 years’ litigation experience with disability and life insurance defense work is preferred

  • Litigation experience in employment matters or with MFDA/IIROC matters is an asset

  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite, Teams, and other legal software

  • Able to work with agility, initiative and with a client-service orientation

  • Able to demonstrate sound judgement including the ability to assess risk practically and with business goals in mind

  • Able to balance competitive priorities and work under pressure, both individually and as part of a team

  • Able to communicate complex legal issues using plain language

  • Comfortable working in a lean/continuous improvement setting (daily management system meetings, scrum bans etc.)  

  • This position is based in Toronto, but candidates located in other Ontario regions will be considered

  • The position involves travel (mostly in South-Western Ontario) and a valid driver's license/vehicle is required

  • Fluency in French is an asset
