Group insurance eligibility for dependent children
News Release
It may sound cliché, but children grow up so fast… Who hasn’t felt like they go from the cradle to university in a flash? But, once they grow up, what happens to their group insurance coverage?
In most of our contracts, dependent children are eligible for group insurance coverage until 20 years of age, if they meet the following criteria:
- Be covered by the public health insurance plan in their province of residence
- Meet the definition of full-time Canadian resident
- Meet the definition of a dependent child under the group insurance contract
Starting at 21 years of age, dependent children are eligible for group insurance coverage under most of our contracts if they meet the following criteria:
- Be under 26 years of age and registered full-time at a recognized educational institution
- Have a mental or physical disability and be unable to earn a living because of said disability, provided it was declared when the insured was a child, subject to eligibility criteria
As a result, you are required to confirm the full-time student status of your dependent children between 21 and 26 years of age to maintain their group insurance coverage from iA Financial Group. To do so, you must:
- During the year in which the dependent child turns 21:
- Contact the Customer Service Department at 1-877-422-6487 to confirm the student status
- In subsequent years, during the summer before the beginning of each school year:
- Complete the confirmation of student status form provided by iA Financial Group and return it to the address or numbers indicated on the form
or - Contact the Customer Service Department to confirm the student status
- Complete the confirmation of student status form provided by iA Financial Group and return it to the address or numbers indicated on the form
Note that, in some contracts, the student status must be confirmed when the insured is 18 and the provisions of your contract take precedence.
