Frequently Asked Questions
Is it mandatory for a snowmobile to be registered?
Yes. It's mandatory to register your snowmobile, regardless of what you use it for. Visit the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) website to learn more. But you should also be aware that you’re not covered by the SAAQ if you’re involved in an accident, unless it involves a vehicle on a public road.
Why get insurance for your snowmobile? What are the benefits of snowmobile insurance?
One of the main benefits for snowmobilers is access to Fédération des clubs de motoneigistes du Québec (FCMQ) trails. However, you need to have civil liability insurance at a bare minimum.
It’s also important to look at your other insurance needs. Civil liability covers you for damage to your snowmobile for which you are not responsible, but it does not cover you when you are at fault. The same applies to theft, which is always a concern, even though there are ways to reduce the risks. Considering the high value of some snowmobiles, it's important to make sure you have enough coverage.
Then there’s the fact that even if you pay your registration fee, you're not insured by the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec if you’re involved in an accident, unless it involves a car or other vehicle on a public road.
Should I store my snowmobile in the summer?
There's no need to store your snowmobile in the summer. We calculate the annual premium based on seasonal use. In other words, we assume you will only use your snowmobile during the winter months, which means that storing it would not result in a discount on your premium.
But if you do decide to store it, you may be eligible for a partial refund of your registration fee. Visit the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec website to learn more.
What is the minimum age to drive a snowmobile?
You must hold a valid driver's licence and be at least 16 years old to drive a snowmobile. For snowmobilers under 18, a training certificate is also required. The ConduiPro group of driving schools has been authorized by the Fédération des clubs de motoneigistes du Québec to offer this training.
Can all types of snowmobiles be insured?
We offer insurance for all types and makes of snowmobile: two seater, one seater, performance, etc. The only exceptions are racing snowmobiles and snowmobiles that have had major modifications.
