Organic professional development within the organization

After interacting with actuarial professionals at iA during networking events, I was keen to apply for an internship with the company—already aware of iA’s solid reputation within the insurance industry and when it comes to opportunities for professional growth.

Accordingly, during my various internships at iA, I was given the opportunity to work in various departments. I was involved in a variety of stimulating projects that helped me to develop my technical and professional skills. During my time at iA, I felt that my work was valued and that my mentors were there to support me. These internships enabled me to put into practice what I learned at school and acquire new skills that I would not have been to learn in the classroom. This positive experience, the company culture and the many opportunities provided strengthened my resolve to join iA permanently as an actuarial analyst.

I was impressed by iA’s attentiveness to the wellbeing of the employees and by the many benefits offered, including flexible and dynamic work environments that foster employee development. Finally, I was pleasantly surprised by the company’s involvement in the community, demonstrating tremendous generosity and commitment to causes that are important to me.

What would I say to students that are hesitant to apply for an internship at iA? While doing my master’s in financial economics at the University of Toronto, I found the perfect job to do what I love at iA.

Experienced and dedicated mentors

As an intern, I was given significant responsibilities, from designing a sophisticated internal data infrastructure to developing solid research on trading signals. Not only did these projects directly impact our portfolios, but they also played a major role in our team’s quantitative investment initiatives.

The beginning of a long relationship

At iA, I immersed myself in the world of retail funds and was encouraged to share my opinions and market strategies, which is a rewarding experience for a young professional. After completing my studies and moving into a full-time analyst role, I continued to contribute to various aspects of the portfolio construction process. What impressed me most was my direct involvement in trading portfolios, as this seamlessly links the theoretical knowledge I’ve acquired from academic research papers with real-world asset management practice.

A learning organization that champions internal mobility

My iA adventure began over 10 years ago! At the time, I got my first business administration internship for my college diploma on the other side of the country in our Vancouver office!

The following summer, I followed that up with a second internship at our head office in Quebec City as an administrator. As I continued my studies in business administration at Université Laval, iA offered me the opportunity to work part-time during my studies and full-time in the summer, as long as I was available. This enabled me to continue developing my professional skills throughout my studies.

Subsequently, I held three different positions within different business segments so that I could develop the cross-disciplinary skills that would enable to advance within the company. The opportunity for internal mobility that iA offered, as well as my desire for continuous development, played a key role in my professional fulfillment and in my ability to surpass myself. The flexible work environment, friendly atmosphere and inclusive coworkers and managers are an integral part of the iA professional experience. Today, I thank the student that I was in 2009 for choosing iA for my first internship!
