Reporting to the Director of Underwriting and the Head Underwriter, the incumbent must be able to handle all cases assigned to him/her. These include large amount and complex applications for different life insurance, critical illness and disability insurance products. In doing so, the successful candidate will display exception competence in all levels of risk selection case management, current medical factors, testing procedures, industry trends, and reinsurance practices, avocation, residential, and other non-medical factors, financial analysis and interpretation of financial information.

-Must ensure that the risks are appropriately classified.
-Must follow Company's guidelines according to product description, compliance guidelines, marketing concepts and underwriting philosophy. If not certain, must ensure to refer the case or discuss it with the Regional Underwriting Leader, Director of Underwriting, another Senior Underwriter, Medical Director or the reinsurers.
-Must ensure the risks accepted meet the mortality expectations priced into the Company's products.
-Review cases on an adhoc basis to provide second initials on cases above a given underwriter's approval authority, or provide a second opinion.
-Identify backlogs or procedural roadblocks and take the necessary steps to correct.
-Determine expectations and alternatives for various underwriting problems (on a case by case basis) and recommend changes to underwriting practices if a trend is identified.
-Must understand the field perspective and possess strong listening and creative problem-solving skills. Must be perceived as flexible and fair but not be easily swayed or change a decision because of pressure from the field.
-Must possess excellent communication skills and the ability to provide top-notch advisor experience.

-Must be able to train and coach less experienced underwriters.

-Must be able to do conduct underwriting audits, as required.
-Must be able to discuss medical impairments and reasons for ratings and or declines with our advisors.
-Must be able to produce an agreed number of final decisions per week. This number is decided by the Director of Underwriting in accordance with company and industry standards.
-Approval authority of $5,000,000 for all life products.
-Approval authority of $500,000 for critical illness insurance.
-Must be able to underwrite disability insurance.

- A minimum of 10 years of individual life and living benefits underwriting experience as a senior underwriter and knowledge of the life insurance industry
- University Degree in health sciences or related fields
- FLMI Designation and working towards the FALU Designation
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; written and oral French an asset
- Must be a team player with a positive attitude
- Working knowledge of underwriting systems
- Ability to influence and negotiate
- Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, good organizational and multi-tasking skills
- Advanced knowledge of medical terminology and underwriting principles

Please note that due to the current situation, this position will start remotely. We have 3 positions to fill and the selected candidates will then be able to work from home or from our offices in Quebec City, Montreal, Toronto or Vancouver.
