Quebec is launching a public psychotherapy program

News Release

In December, the Quebec health minister announced the launch of a public psychotherapy program. Under this program, psychotherapy services for people suffering from anxiety, depression or other mental health disorders will be covered under the public health plan (Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec [RAMQ]).

The purpose of this program is to provide medical coverage to people who need specific psychotherapy services or care – between first-time consultation and hospitalization – which, as of yet, have not been covered under the public health system. Psychologists, social workers and nurses who provide care to diagnosed patients will be reimbursed by the RAMQ. Quebec estimates that this new range of services will impact approximately 3% of the population.

While severe cases are already handled under the public system, this program will be able to cover less severe cases.

The year 2018 will be a year of starting and running the program, especially for the training and registration of professionals. The details of the program still need to be confirmed. We will monitor this situation closely and analyse how this program will impact private group insurance plans. We will keep you informed as the situation develops. Stay tuned for further communications!
