Creation of a new drug insurance plan for people under 25 in Ontario

News Release

When the Government of Ontario tabled its 2017 budget in April, it launched a new drug insurance plan for youth aged 24 and under. The program, OHIP+: Children and Youth Pharmacare, will cover the costs of prescription medications funded through the Ontario Drug Benefit program for youth aged 24 and under, regardless of family income and whether they have the right to private insurance. This program will begin January 1, 2018. As of this date, youth can obtain their prescription medications for free simply by presenting their OHIP card and prescription.

Please note that coverage under this new plan will be automatic, and the plan does not include deductibles or co-payment requirements.

Once we have more information about this program, we will review its potential impacts on group insurance plans with insureds in Ontario. We will keep you informed as the situation develops.

Rest assured that our priority is to help families access the care and medications they need while continuing to offer plans at an affordable cost.
