A hit-and-run is when your vehicle is hit and damaged, and the driver or the owner of the vehicle who caused the accident leaves the scene and cannot be identified.

If your insurance policy includes coverage for damages resulting from a collision with another vehicle, your insurance company will assess the damage to your vehicle and will compensate you based on the terms of your policy.

If you are the victim of a hit-and-run and you are not covered for damages resulting from a collision with another vehicle, the SAAQ (provincial auto insurance corporation) has a compensation fund to cover damages to vehicles or other property for Quebec residents.

What to do if you hit a vehicle and the other driver isn’t there

Many minor accidents take place in parking lots. When this happens, the owner of the other vehicle usually isn’t there. If you hit a vehicle and you can’t contact the owner, it is recommended that you contact the police directly to report the incident.
